Hillcrest High School officially kicked off its fall softball season on a new turf field thanks to funding from the district’s capital project budget. SPS board member Denise Fredrick, a 1972 Hillcrest grad, threw out the first pitch as part of the pregame ceremony Wednesday afternoon that included presentation of colors and the national anthem.
The Hillcrest softball team lost their long-time field, located adjacent to the campus on CBC’s property, during the offseason. Parents and players urged the school board to take action and teamed with members of the community they got the project done in time for the fall semester. The new softball field, built on the previous Dick Birmingham Field, also benefits the Hillcrest baseball team, which plays its season in the spring.
Logan-Rogersville won the game 6-3.
