After opening their season with a heartbreaker last week, the MVBT-Liberty Eagles earned redemption at home Tuesday night with an 11-1 win over the Norwood Pirates.

“We came out and hit the ball today,” said Eagles head coach Allen Hedden. “We had a disappointing game in Summersville against Ellington last Friday; we were up 6-4 in the bottom of the 7th and gave up three runs and got beat 7-6. They wanted to come out and couldn’t wait for today.”

Senior pitcher Cale Cornman struck out 8 batters and had only 5 people reach base on the night.

“Cale pitched a great game,” said Coach Hedden. “He’s our workhorse, he’s our ace on the mound. We’re going to go to him. Norwood is a good team and we knew that going in, so we’re going to throw our number one at them…he did what he was supposed to do.“

The Eagles also recorded eight hits. “Everyone up and down the lineup from 1-9 did something positive at bat to get us a run or to get people in scoring position,” said Coach Hedden.

In the first inning, Koel Orchard, Corbin Dewick, and Cornman each scored off of walks, three of the team’s nine walks in the game. In the second, Matt Coatney scored on a passed ball, then Riky Williams stole two bases and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Cale Cornman.

Bats really came alive for Liberty in the third inning. They scored six runs off of four base hits, including a triple and an RBI from Corbin Dewick.

The Pirates didn’t have an answer for the Eagles’ attack. In the bottom of the fifth, the Pirates reached base on a Max Malone walk, and scored on an RBI double by A. J. Barnes, but a groundout ended their efforts.

“We came out and we got two guys on and then we kind of just wasted away,” said Pirates coach Trent Oxenreider.  “We had a lot of mental mistakes. We couldn’t catch or take care of the baseball very well, and they made us pay for it.”

Oxenreider complimented the work of his pitchers. “Joel Ogletree competed better as the game went on,” said Coach Oxenreider.  “Weston Chadwell did a good job as well.”

The Pirates move to 2-1 on the season while the Eagles record their first win.
