ROGERSVILLE — Bolivar brought home four individual championships and the team title while wrestling in a conference tournament for the final time in the foreseeable future.

The COC Small is disbanding and the Liberators currently have no conference affiliation beginning next school year.

Bolivar’s 254 points edged runner-up Rogersville’s 220.5 total and third-place Marshfield’s 214. Defending champ Buffalo was fourth with 196.

The Liberators’ individual champs were 106-pounder Granite Cunningham (30-4), 126-pounder Luke Moffett (34-4), 152-pounder Daryin Sharp (28-3) and 160-pounder Hayden Burks (36-4).

“Getting an individual championship and team championship is huge because we’ll be an independent next year,” said Burks, a sophomore and two-time conference champ. “I was hoping to be a four-timer, but it won’t work out that way.”

Burks joined Buffalo’s Ethan Smith as the only wrestlers with five pins. Burks needed a total of 9:01 of mat time to put all of his opponents on their backs.

Already, he has seven more wins than he finished with last season.

“I worked hard in the off-season and it’s paying off,” he said. “Today was an amazing day. I helped my record and my district seed.”

Rogersville’s Gabe Brandenburg somewhat reluctantly accepted an inhaler during a break in action in the 113-pound final at the COC Small Schools Championship on Saturday.

Rogersville coach Jason Carter had an inhaler on hand, after Brandenburg was rushed to a hospital emergency room last weekend after the Republic Tournament.

Brandenburg missed all of the Wildcats’ practices this week, but still rolled to the 113 title Saturday.

“I don’t like taking breaks,” he said of using the inhaler. “But I guess coach wanted to be cautious and I actually needed it. It helped.”

Brandenburg was told by doctors last weekend he suffered from a low blood sugar level and an upper respiratory infection.

“I guess not eating enough has caused me to have low blood sugar and they say if I push things too hard, that’s causing me problems, too,” Brandenburg said. “This is kind of new to me, although I did have some breathing problems when I was little. But this has been the hardest it’s ever been on me.”

Brandeburg (27-3), a freshman who won also won a championship at the Kinloch Tournament, outlasted Bolivar’s Zac Sokolik 10-6 in the final round Saturday. Earlier, he posted two first-period pins and a pair of second-period pins.

Brandenburg and the Wildcats’ Jay Strausbaugh (132), Lucas Campbell (145) and Barrett Beaird (195) celebrated an individual championship on their home mat.

The most competitive match in the final round was at 195, where Beaird (27-6) downed Marshfield’s Daryl Vannostrand (35-4) 5-4.

Beaird jumped out to a 5-0 lead, thanks to a reversal and near-fall.

“I was confident in my ties and throws,” Beaird said. “I knew they were going to be my big go-to (moves) when I needed them. I was pretty close (to a pin), but he’s a strong kid.”

Beaird’s breakout junior season has been fulfilling to say the least. He was ruled ineligible by the Missouri State High School Activities Association as a sophomore a year ago, after transferring from Ozark.

“It was pretty tough to sit here and not wrestle,” Beaird said. “I love the sport. But it did have ups and downs. I had some free time and I love it here at Rogersville.”

Campbell (30-4) became the first Rogersville wrestler to be crowned a four-time conference champ since former Wildcats greats Sam and Joe Zimmer.

“It makes me super proud to be in the same category as them,” Campbell said. “They were the best here. To be mentioned with them is very humbling.”

Campbell previous won titles at 106 as a freshman, 132 as a sophomore and 138 as a junior.

Campbell collected four pins. He gained a fall in only :18 versus Buffalo’s Keaton Rackley (25-7) in the final round, after Rackley suffered a deep cut and bruise around his left eye and nose earlier in the day.

“It was a nasty cut,” Campbell said. “I wish the best for him and hope he can get healed before Districts.”

Strausbaugh (32-2) had three pins and a 15-0 technical fall.

Buffalo’s Floyd Miller (39-2) took care of the conference’s last undefeated wrestler by manhandling Reeds Spring’s Clayton Johnson (15-1) 10-1 in the 170 final.

Miller nearly made like WWE superstar Brock Lesnar by turning Rogersville into ’Suplex City.’ He tossed Johnson over his right shoulder to cap off his dominating performance.

He had a similar throw in a match earlier this week.

“I’ve been working on good hip position,” Miller said. “That’s really been (the key) to the throws — hips and arching. (Johnson) was running into me, so it was pretty much all his momentum taking him over me.”

Miller added he is a Lesnar fan, even though he doesn’t watch much WWE since his family does not have a TV at home.

“I watch what I can when I search and find something on wrestling and MMA on YouTube,” he said. “My Dad is huge inspiration to me and he says TV kills production.

“One other thing he’s engrained to me is getting everything done and once you get it all done, then you can move on to other things. We work for what we’ve got and that makes us happy for what we have. I don’t think a lot of kids understand that nowadays. When they get something like headphones, they don’t appreciate them and don’t take care of them. But if you are the person who works hard to buy headphones, you really take care of them.”

Miller hasn’t lost in the new year, after bowing to Columbia Hickman’s Jeremiah Kent close to the end of 2017.

“I was pretty upset after that match,” Miller said. “But it has made me work harder and made me realize where I can go. You don’t really realize the level you are at until you wrestle somebody like that to a close match. That opened my eyes that I can wrestle with somebody of his level.”

Buffalo 138-pounder Ethan Smith (36-2) picked up five pins on his way to a championship. He topped the tourney by needing a total of just 7:20 to record his five falls.

The Bison’s Colten Kenady (37-3) claimed the 220 championship while gaining a combined 45 points in two wins by technical fall.

Reeds Spring 120-pounder Eric Holt (27-6) won a title as a freshman, collecting four pins along the way. He went the distance with Bolivar’s Canyon Cunningham and pulled out a 5-3 win.

Marshfield 182-pounder Clay Wilson (34-5) had three pins en route to a title, while Bluejays 285-pounder Tristen Burton (28-9) received three byes, before pinning his two opponents for a title.
