Rain delaying the start of the final round of the Price Cutter Charity Championship for 30-minutes Sunday morning.
Coming in, it seemed like Mother Nature was the only thing keeping the PCCC Tournament record from being touched. The 27-under-par finish has been around for 12-years.
Martin Trainer was feeling calm entering Sunday with a two-stroke lead on the field thanks in part to a 10-under opening round on Thursday. After a 3-under front-9, Trainer seemed like he could take it easy on the back-9.
Bogeys however on 12 and 14 combined with a birdie parade from Henrick Norlander suddenly made it a one-stroke difference with two holes to play.
Norlander an amazing 2nd shot on 18 would set up an Eagle putt for the outright lead, but it slides left. Norlander birdies to finish with a 24-under, and a tie with Trainer. Who in the next group, was hitting from a very familiar spot on 18.
Trainer used a 2-iron from the exact spot on Thursday and Friday and sailed into the water. On Sunday, his swing was true – popping the green pin high on the right side of the green.
Trainer two-putts his way to a one-stroke victory at 25-under. Not a new tournament record, but he’ll take his second win of the year any day.
Meanwhile a Springfield native was also eyeing a championship Sunday. Highland Springs employee Terry Frost has filled in as the caddy to the eventual winners of the Price Cutter in 2016 and 17. But no three-peat for Frost this year as his golfer finishes 14-strokes back.
While it’s not a victory for Terry, Trainer becomes the first American to win the Price Cutter in five years.
