Former Cassville football coach Jay Rogers is enjoying a different pace of play these days.
“It (coaching golf) is a lot less hours involved. I would (also) say a lot less stress, but a different kind of stress,” Rogers said.
He has experience coaching boys in golf, but this is his first season as a girls coach.
“I was kind of used to golf with the guys, but I have never coached girls teams before so that has been an adjustment, but it has been a lot of fun,” Rogers said.
It is not only his first time coaching girls, but he is the coach for the Lady Wildcats inaugural season.
“We have all gotten a lot of support. I have heard so many good things and lot of people are excited for what we are doing,” Alexis Mann said
Only two girls have ever held clubs before and those two were just getting into the game last year.
“(I have been golfing) seriously since last spring. I was on the boys team,” Mann said
When the school board saw that the girls were playing with the boys they realized there was an interest.
Now they are trying things out with a junior varsity team.
Things are only going up from the first practice.
“I think it (the first practice) was frustrating for all of us, but it was a lot of fun,” Rogers said. “We had a lot of kids that had never had a golf club in their hand.”
“The first practice I was missing everything and just wasn’t doing good. Then I started hitting on all my (shots),” Alexa Perez said
The Lady Wildcats are approaching this season like they would a good tee shot; with patience.
“From that point (the first practice) to now we have seen vast improvement,” Rogers said.
They hope this is only the first year of many.
“We are hoping we will be able to continue our golf program and make it grow more and have a lot of interest,” Mann said.
“For me, I want them to be able to learn the game right. Learn the rules, learn the basics and then just have fun and keep working to improve each day,” Rogers said.
