The Houston Lady Tigers lost to Doniphan in the opening round of district play to mark the end of a nine-win season. Jim Moore begins his fourth year as head coach and believes his young but talented team could turn some heads.
The Lady Tigers graduated forwards Kennedy Campbell and Madison Curtis. Madi was a hard-nosed defender, and at 6’1”, Kennedy created match-up issues and could shoot inside and outside.
But while the team doesn’t list any current seniors on the roster, the cupboard isn’t bare. Three returning starters have put the work into their game in the offseason.
Hannah Dzurick displayed her vast skill set in her freshman season with 12.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 3.1 steals per game. She will run the point as an experienced ball handler who sees the floor well. “She has improved on taking the ball to the hole,” said Coach Moore. “She has always been able to shoot it. I believe she will have a big year for us.”

Junior Jaden Stell put up 13.2 points per game in what was predicted as a breakout year. “Jaden is one of the best shooters in the area,” said Coach Moore. “She didn’t get much recognition last year because we didn’t win many games. I think Jaden and Hannah have the chance to be one of the best back courts in our area if they continue in the pace they are at,” he added.
Riley Scheets, junior, added depth to the post position and put up 4.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. She is a strong defender and rebounder and an offensive threat. “She has worked on her post moves and ball handling,” said Moore. “She is quickly becoming a multi-tool player.”
“All three are fired up to get the season going,” said Coach Moore.
A host of talented freshmen will also take the floor for the Lady Tigers. Aliyah Walker is a skilled ball handler and could earn a starting position with her athleticism, ability to see the floor and ability to attack the basket and shoot from downtown. Katie Joe Chipps developed her shot over the summer and is also a contender to start. Karlee Curtis “is probably one of the best all-around female athletes in our school,” said Coach Moore. “She’s still discovering her capabilities and will be a force to reckon with when she does.” MacKenzie Bryant is a 5’9” post player who rounds out the freshman class. She brings good game knowledge and could play big minutes for Houston.
While their youth is obvious, so is their talent and work ethic. The Lady Tigers want to play hard for four quarters and have fun doing so, while also slipping into contention for district and conference play.
“They get along well and care about each other,” said Coach Moore of his team. “We may have some growing pains, but they are beginning to believe in each other and that’s a special attribute.”
The Lady Tigers host a Jamboree Nov. 19, followed by their home opener against Licking Dec. 9.
