Referee Tyler Stewart was supposed to work the Class 4 and 5 final fours this weekend, and his heart goes out to the teams that can’t participate.

“I mean I try to put myself in their shoes, because in 2006 I was in their shoes, and I couldn’t imagine having my career cut short like that,” Stewart said. “I’ll give MSHSAA and Missouri a little credit that they held on as long as they could. It’s sad for Kickapoo and those boys and coach McHenry over there, but what can you do?”

He knows how much the final four means for the student athletes, but looking ahead to possibly losing spring sports, he also relates to the officials that depend on the extra cash flow.

“I used it to pay my way through college at Missouri State, and I know there are other kids doing that too, so hopefully that doesn’t happen with the spring sports, but the way that it’s going it looks like it is,” said Stewart.
