Whether it’s defending their own net, or attacking the opposition’s, two particular Glendale soccer Falcons provide quite a challenge for opponents.

“Both Alex and Cam have been starters since their sophomore year,” said Glendale Head Coach Jeff Rogers.

Now as seniors, Alex Spence and Cam Meyer lead by their play and through their words.

“I keep everybody positive, encourage everybody, tell them where to go and just do it in a kind way and it’ll always help the team out,” Alex said.

Another way Alex helps the team is by scoring goals. That’s what he did when he buried two versus rival Kickapoo Tuesday night.

“I let the kids have some freedom to make some decisions on the field, we talk about it and they’ll shift around during the game, so I’m not surprised when I see him jump up there because he’s basically saying ‘give me the ball, I want to score’,” Rogers said.

Meanwhile, on the other end of the field is the Falcons other co-captain, Cam Meyer.

He says being vocal is his version of working smarter, not harder.

“It makes my job easier because the more they do, the less I have to do and I’ve just always been taught to talk and it helps everybody all the way up the field,” Cam said.

It also helps when Cam creates offense by kicking the ball 60 yards in the air from inside his own penalty area.

“He actually has a few assists this year where he can drive a ball and we just have to have someone run on it,” Rogers said.

Those assists and saves and goals are nice, but these two seniors say it’s the captain’s arm-band they wear that means the most.

“Freshman year, I had it. The two years in between I worked for it, but didn’t get it,” Cam said. “This year I have it and I take a lot of pride in it, keeping the guys calm [and] organized because it starts with me.”

“It’s an honor being a captain for Coach Rogers and Glendale soccer,” Alex added. “Both my brothers that had come through the program were captains and coming to every single game when I was little, this was my biggest dream right here and I’m living it right now.”

This year, Alex and Cam hope to lead Glendale to a second straight Final Four appearance.
